The final round of the eight-team tournament is set for Sunday.The matchup with the 2-0 Cougars will be interesting for the Jays to see how they respond to Tuesdays 79-67 win over No. 9 Wisconsin. While it would be natural for at least a bit of a letdown -- Washington State was 9-22 last season -- Creighton coach Greg McDermott anticipates the Jays will be okay.After the Wisconsin win, McDermott said that victory was the biggest in his seven-year tenure at the school.Its a step in the right direction for us, McDermott said. We think were a long way from reaching our potential, but were certainly moving in the right direction.While the starting lineup seems to have been solidified after the first two victories, McDermott has no problem with going to one of the deeper benches in the Big East Conference for help.Seniors Isaiah Zierden and Zach Hanson, along with junior Toby Hegner, all have starting experience in their careers.I think we have a very talented starting five, McDermott said. But I also am able to bring in really three former starters off the bench.To be able to bring that type of experience off the bench is a luxury not a lot of programs have. It proved to be big for us (Tuesday night) in the Wisconsin game.McDermott said he talked to many of his coaching peers, and they all told him the Paradise Jam was one of their favorite events, primarily because of the way the teams are treated, the venue and the tropical setting.Even with those pleasant distractions, McDermott has the Bluejays focused on the Cougars after they began the season with wins over Montana State (69-65) and Central Washington (81-76).Coach (Ernie) Kent obviously is doing a good job there, McDermott said. Im impressed with some of their young players. They have a focus of trying to get that basketball inside.When it goes in there, those guys know what to do with it. Its going to be a challenge for us and one that were going to take seriously.Staying strong on defense and pushing the offensive tempo more than they were able to against Wisconsin would go a long way toward letting the Jays improve to 3-0.We have to be who we are, McDermott said. We want to play as fast-paced as we possibly can while still making good decisions. Thats the trick when youre trying to play fast; you can slow down enough to make sure youre making good decisions with the basketball and taking good shots.Defensively we did a good job against Wisconsin. He is the team leader among returnees in points (14.8), assists (4.9) and rebounds (3.9).Trimble is expected to play Friday despite hurting his ankle and playing just nine minutes in a 95-61 exhibition win against Division II Catawba on Saturday.Besides Trimble, the Terps have a strong freshman class, wiith point guard Anthony Cowan, 6-foot-7 forward Justin Jackson and 6-7 guard Kevin Huerter. Both played in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC), as Trimble starred at Bishop OConnell in Virginia and Cowan played at St. Johns College High in Washington.Hes a really good passer who can shoot, Trimble said of Cowan. But hes mostly a pass-first point guard, which is something thats good for our offense. With Anthony being here, I can play off the ball, which is something I havent (done) since I was in high school.The top player for American is Delante Jones, who averaged 12 points last season as the Patriot League Rookie of the Year. The Eagles are picked to finish fifth in the 10-team Patriot League after going 12-19 last season.The teams last met in December 2008 at Maryland; the Terps won 67-51. On Dec. 22, 2007, in College Park, the Eagles pulled a 67-59 upset against Maryland and former coach Gary Williams, who was an American University assistant early in his Hall of Fame coaching career.
