RENTON, Wash. -- For the first time since Russell Wilson assumed the starting quarterback job in 2012, the Seattle Seahawks dont have a veteran on the roster to serve as his backup.Undrafted rookie free agent Trevone Boykin and 2015 undrafted free agent Jake Heaps are the only other two quarterbacks on the roster. The shared NFL experience between the two amounts to precisely one preseason game and one passing attempt, both coming from Heaps last year with the New York Jets.General manager John Schneider said he believes Boykin would have been drafted between the third and fifth rounds of the NFL draft if not for an arrest prior to the Alamo Bowl in December. Instead, Boykin went undrafted and signed with Seattle in May.He can do the same things that we try to do with (Russell Wilson), head coach Pete Carroll said. So now it is just a long journey to get him right in a lot of areas. He has got the makeup, it appears, and I am really excited about him.Boykin has taken the majority of second-team reps throughout training camp with Heaps working with the third team. Carroll has touted Boykins similarities to Wilson as an intriguing opportunity for the team. Boykin as a backup would give Seattle the luxury of not having to alter its offense should something happen to Wilson. While Carroll said he can picture moving forward without a veteran option, Schneider said the Seahawks will keep looking at what players may be available.I like all our players, Im just never really one of those guys thats like, `Yeah, we got this. We got this. You know what I mean? Schneider said. Petes job is to instill confidence in people and he does a great job. Its one of his best attributes, making everybody feel great about themselves and instilling confidence in their abilities. My job is to be forward-thinking and our staff ... to be ready for whats coming next if it doesnt work out.Boykin said he is now comfortable taking snaps from center after working out of the shotgun for the majority of his tenure at TCU. He also feels his understanding of the playbook is coming along well.Im getting it all down, Boykin said. The hardest thing for me right now is just calling protections. But as far as concepts and saying the plays in the huddle Ive gotten 10 times better than I was when I first started.Carroll has been bullish about the performances of Boykin and Heaps through a week of training camp.(Boykin) is always able to make things happen and in a very similar fashion as Russell did, Carroll said. Were very confident that he has a chance to help us. Let me tell you though, you didnt ask about him, but Jake Heaps is lighting it up, he is having a great camp, so that is a very good position for us obviously right now.---AP NFL website: http://www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL coverage on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL Nike Air Force 1 NZ Outlet .J. -- Marshawn Lynch said Thursday it will be good to get back to football after the Seattle quiet talking running back wrapped up his final mandatory media session of Super Bowl week. "Hes going to have hip surgery on Jan. 7, and hell be expected to rehabilitate for four to six months beyond that," Canucks general manager Mike Gillis said Friday in an interview. Coach Mike Munchak says Fokou stretched ligaments in his left knee Oct. 13 against Seattle, which could keep out up to five weeks even though the linebacker didnt need surgery. The road has not been kind to the Vancouver Canucks, and amid a five-game swing along the East Coast, they are hoping that an early start to the second game of a back-to-back against the Washington Capitals wont leave them a step behind.Coming off a 4-2 loss to the Florida Panthers on Saturday night, Vancouver will hustle to Washington for a rare start at 5 p.m. EST, further compressing the Canucks third game in four nights. Vancouver has only won four contests away from home this season. You cant get down three goals to a team like that and expect to come back. We werent good enough tonight, especially early on, Canucks winger Daniel Sedin said.Vancouver is battling injuries between the pipes, as goaltender Ryan Miller is sidelined with a lower-body ailment suffered in Thursdays victory at Tampa Bay. Backup Jacob Markstrom started against the Panthers, but prospect Thatcher Demko, who was called up from Utica of the American Hockey League on Saturday, could get the nod against the Capitals. Its been something Ive really been looking forward to; youre just not sure when its going to happen, Demko said. Im just excited to be here. The Canucks will get one member of their lineup back on the ice as right winger Jannik Hansen will return to the lineup after missing more than a month with a rib injury. Hansen practiced with the team Saturday and is preparing to play for the first time since Nov. 5.It (stinks) sitting out, Hansen said. Its boring. You dont feel like youre a part of the team.dddddddddddd Its definitely not fun.Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen got to experience Hansens pain for the first time since joining Washington before the 2014 season. Niskanen missed Fridays win against Buffalo with an upper-body injury after being on the receiving end of a boarding penalty from Bostons Patrice Bergeron on Wednesday.I dont think it was that bad of a hit, Niskanen said after practice Saturday. I didnt think it was live, and even after watching it, I can see where that can happen. It was one of those where I lost my balance the wrong distance from boards. If Im two feet closer to the boards, nothing happens. If Im two feet further away, nothing happens.Niskanen hopes to return to the lineup against Vancouver, but is in the NHLs concussion protocol. He practiced well and said he felt pretty good, so well what his status is (Sunday) morning, Capitals coach Barry Trotz said after practice Saturday. Theres a protocol the NHL has for injuries and well follow that protocol to a T. And thats why we cant give you an answer right now.The Capitals beat Vancouver 5-2 on Oct. 29 with Philipp Grubauer picking up the road victory.No. 1 netminder Braden Holtby figures to get the start Sunday, with each game critical for Washington thanks to its position in the red-hot Metropolitan Division. Even with 35 points, the Capitals sit in fifth place. ' ' '
