SAN DIEGO -- Jake Arrieta might be starting a late-season push for an NL Cy Young Award. Air Max 270 Scontate . Hes done it before.Arrieta threw eight scoreless innings of two-hit ball to become the NLs first 16-game winner and Kris Bryant and Addison Russell homered, lifting the Chicago Cubs over the San Diego Padres 5-3 on Tuesday night. The story line is Jake, Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. He hardly ever lost the plate and his fastball command kept getting better as the game progressed. That was really reminiscent of last year.Arrieta (16-5) allowed a single to Alex Dickerson in the second and Christian Bethancourts double in the eighth. The defending NL Cy Young winner has two no-hitters in the past year, including one while he went 11-0 with an 0.41 ERA over his final 12 starts last season. Its hard to replicate what he did last year, Maddon said. He just nailed it. So if he gets hot over these last couple of weeks you could see more of what you just saw tonight. The Padres brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth, but Aroldis Chapman got the last two outs for his 28th save after Felix Pena was charged with three runs.I was mad at Joe for taking me out, Arrieta said. But at the same time he said, `remember last year? Lets conserve some things for October and late September. That is our game plan.We want to be as strong and dominant as we can be but still in the back of our mind that is that late September, early October, mid-October, is really the most important thing for the ball club. Could I have finished the game? Yes. But does it play in our favor to maybe conserve that for later? Yes.Bryants 33rd home run tied him with Colorados Nolan Arenado for the NL lead.Russell smacked his fifth homer in five games, a two-run shot that put the Cubs ahead 4-0 in the fifth.Arrieta won for the fourth straight start. He had six strikeouts and three walks. The major league-leading Cubs are 21-5 in their last 26 games and 35 games over .500 for the first time since Sept. 25, 2008.Chicago has scored at least three runs in 22 straight games and has hit a minimum of two home runs in each of its last seven outings.Christian Friedrich (4-10) lost his eighth consecutive decision. He lasted 5 1/3 innings, giving up five runs and seven hits. He walked four and struck out two.Bryant got his second RBI in the sixth when his sacrifice fly scored Arrieta, who was aboard on a one-out triple. In the Cubs three-run fifth, Ben Zobrist stroked a run-scoring double which preceded Russells long fly. Zobrist had three hits.I definitely made some bad pitches, Friedrich said. It kind of got away from me.Bryant, who won the Golden Spikes Award at the University of San Diego, hit his second home run in two games in the third. His one-out blast put the Cubs ahead 1-0.The Padres blew several chances early.Travis Jankowski was picked off third in the first, and Arrieta, who is 27-5 since the beginning of last August, wiggled from jams in the next two innings thanks to two double plays, the first of three for the Cubs. The pickoff at third was rather large and the double plays, those are demoralizing for the other side, Maddon said.TRAINERS ROOMCubs: RHP John Lackey (right shoulder strain) is progressing with his throwing program and will have a bullpen session this weekend in Los Angeles.Padres: RHP Tyson Ross (right shoulder strain) will have a 45-pitch outing on Thursday for Class A Lake Elsinore. Ross was the Padres opening day starter and hasnt pitched since.UP NEXTCubs: RHP Kyle Hendricks (11-7, 21.6) has 16 straight starts in which hes allowed three runs or fewer, the longest streak in the majors this season. Hes 2-0 with a 1.26 ERA in four starts against the Padres. Hendricks has won all but three road games this year.Padres: Paul Clemens (2-2, 4.82), who was claimed off waivers last month, worked five innings in his last outing on Thursday but didnt figure in the decision. He surrendered three runs on eight hits and three walks to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Nike Air Force 1 Low Saldi . Philadelphia is 2-0 against the Senators this season and scored five goals in each victory. The Flyers recorded a 5-0 win in Ottawa on Nov. 12 and then earned a 5-2 home decision on Nov. 19. The Flyers have claimed three straight and four of the last five encounters with the Sens overall and Philly has won two in a row and three of its past four tests in Canadas capital city. Scarpe Air Max Scontate . It was hard for Luck to pull off another comeback, or even get into the end zone, while standing on the sideline. Rivers threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to rookie Keenan Allen and Nick Novak kicked four field goals to give the Chargers a 19-9 victory against the Colts on Monday night. http://www.outletairmaxitalia.it/ . Durant finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds, Jackson matched his career high with 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting and Lamb scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, lifting the Thunder to a 94-88 win over San Antonio and snapping the Spurs 11-game winning streak. PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- With new coach Chris Ash and Rutgers facing a major embarrassment in a supposed step-down game, Janarion Grant showed why he is the Scarlet Knights most exciting player.Grant scored three touchdowns and Rutgers overcame an early scare against Howard in posting a 52-14 victory on Saturday, giving Ash his first win.Grant resurrected a stunned Rutgers (1-1) from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit with an 84-yard kickoff return , and he was in the center of a 21-point third quarter with touchdown runs of 58 and 21 yards.Cant say enough about Janarion Grant and what he brings to the offense and to special teams, Ash said. Hes right now our most electric player and we cant get the ball in his hands enough. Obviously the big kickoff return helped us generate some momentum there in the first half when things were bleak. Second half defensively, we did a better job of getting off the field.Quarterback Chris Laviano added three touchdown passes as the Scarlet Knights scored the final 52 points in wearing down Howard (0-2), an FCS opponent that was facing its second straight Big Ten Conference opponent.Grant was the difference as Rutgers rushed for 375 yards and had 512 yards in total offense. The senior wide receiver finished with six rushes for 106 yards, two receptions for 24 yards and three kickoff returns for 119 yards. His longer rushing TD came on a direct snap in a wildcat formation and was aided by a great block by Laviano. You just try to get him the ball as much as possible and let him do what he does, said Laviano, who was 11 of 22 for 137 yards and an interception. Its super exciting.Grant said his fifth career kickoff return for a touchdown was the turning point.I think that picked every guys head up, Grant said. You just cant give up because were down 14 points.Rutgers tied the game 14-all at the half and dominated in the final 30 minutes, limiting Howard to five yards in total offense.Laviano had touchdown passes of 22 yards to Andre Patton, 7 to Carlton Agudosi and 29 to Jawuan Harris.Kalen Johnson threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Robert Mercer on the opening drive of the game for Howard and he scored on a 15-yard run less than two minute later. It was set up by an interception by Alonte Dunn on Rutgers first play from scrimmage.I pretty much knew two scores against this team was not a safe haven for us, coach Gary Harrell said. Air Max 90 Saldi. We had to continue to play well and we just didnt. We had a lot of mistakes. We had a sloppy finish. I was very disappointed the way we finished.THE TAKEAWAYHOWARD: Harrell may be second-guessing himself after taking out Johnson. He led scoring drives on the first two series and was then replaced by redshirt freshman Jason Collins for the third series, which came after Grants kickoff return. Harrell alternated his quarterbacks against Maryland and he did it again Saturday. The problem was Howard never got going again. Still, the Bison showed signs they will be able to compete in the MEAC and do better than their 1-10 mark a year ago.Harrell said Johnson earned the right to get the majority of snaps the rest of the season.RUTGERS: Despite the lopsided win, Rutgers is going to struggle this year. Howard gashed the defense with its running game and their quarterbacks had no problem finding open receivers. Against better competition the Scarlet Knights are going to be handled easily, much like No. 8 Washington did in the season opener. The most interesting aspect was that Rutgers used freshman quarterback Tylin Oden in the fourth quarter and he showed the athleticism that is needed in the power spread offense.SCARY INJURY: The game was delayed almost 10 minutes in the third quarter when Howard linebacker Marques Blanchard sustained an injury to his back. When I came on the field he had problems moving his lower extremities, then he started moving, Harrell said. I think he will be fine. He moved through all the necessary tests and he seems to be OK.Blanchard was to accompany the team back to Washington, Harrell said.MONEY BALL:Grant was a play too late to help his fellow Rutgers students. An auto dealership sponsored a contest in which 100 students would share $100,000 if the Scarlet Knights returned their opening kickoff for a touchdown. Grant returned the second one for a touchdown. A year ago, Grant was two kickoffs two late in the same contest, returning the third one for a TD against Norfolk State.UP NEXTHOWARD: The Bison play their home opener against Hampton on Sept. 17.RUTGERS: The Scarlet Knights stay home and face New Mexico on Sept. 17.---AP College Football Website: www.collegefootball.org ' ' '
