SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium -- Lewis Hamilton is set for a difficult fight through the field at Sundays Belgian Grand Prix after Mercedes confirmed he would take a grid penalty for using new power unit components.
David Savard Blue Jackets Jersey .Under Formula Ones regulations, drivers are allowed to use no more than five of certain power unit components, with additional ones resulting in grid penalties. Following a series of technical problems at the opening rounds of the season, Hamilton has used five turbochargers and MGU-Hs this year, meaning the sixth will see him move down the grid from wherever he qualifies.Although the team will not make a final decision on how many new components to take until after Friday practice, a spokesperson said it is safe to assume he will be starting towards the back of the grid.As far as I am aware, we will be taking a penalty this weekend, yes, Hamilton said. In terms of winning, thats the goal, but obviously its going to be very hard if the gap has closed between other cars in the third evolution of these cars.Red Bull has been very quick in some of the races and the same with Ferrari particularly, and down the whole grid. So it is going to be hard -- or harder -- than it was in previous years to climb through the field, for sure. Ill do what I can and really its about minimising the damage of taking the penalty. The size of the penalty will depend on how many new components Mercedes decides to take. If it simply takes the sixth turbo and sixth MGU-H it will result in a 15-place penalty (10 places for the first sixth component he uses and an extra five for each additional sixth component). However, Mercedes may choose to stock up on components for later in the year by taking two new sets of all components (for example), which would result in Hamilton starting from the very back of the grid (assuming other drivers are not also impacted by grid penalties). The last time Hamilton started from last place was in China and he was able to fight back through the field to seventh despite damaging his front wing in the first corner. Asked how far he thought he could get up the field, he said it would depend on how big an advantage Mercedes has over its rivals.I dont know how far I can get up and it depends on the pace of the car, he said. So well start tomorrow and find out if Red Bull are right close with us, thatll be two cars less [I can overtake] and three [places] down and then the gap will follow behind. If the others are much, much slower the possibilities go up, but there could be safety cars and all sorts of things.I started last in Hungary a couple of years ago when the gaps [between teams] were much bigger and I came fourth, so Sunday is definitely going to be harder than that. I just hope I can get into the points, as long as Im going forwards thats what matters.Asked if he felt the team had let him down with the reliability issues earlier in the year, Hamilton added: Its a team sport and win and lose together as a team. Whether I make a mistake and the team take the penalty for it or the team makes a mistake -- sometimes its not actually a mistake, its just that kind of thing that happens -- I dont look at it as incompetence. Its a growing experience for us because we have learned a lot from the issues that have happened, and hopefully we wont have those issues again. I guess Im the test mouse that has tested all of these issues, because obviously none of the other Mercedes engines has had the problems Ive had.

Nine days before the opening ceremony, organizing committee chief Dmitry Chernyshenko said Wednesday that Sochi is "fully ready" and will deliver safe, friendly and well-run games that defy the grim reports that have overshadowed preparations. FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Dan Quinn wanted to take an up-close look at Devonta Freeman as a receiver, so the Falcons coach tried to cover the running back on a deep pass route. The results: An easy touchdown for Freeman, and respect from Quinn.I think everybody who saw me covering, we were trying to make sure Devonta gets the catch to get his confidence heading into practice, Quinn said with a smile following Fridays second day of training camp.Freeman should already be confident about his dual-threat skills as a runner and receiver out of Atlantas backfield. His 73 catches in 2015 were the third-most for a running back in the league. He ran for 1,056 yards and 11 touchdowns.Freeman is the starter, but second-year running back Tevin Coleman appears bound for a larger share of the workload this season. Colemans speed could earn him more carries while also giving Matt Ryan another target as a receiver. Both those guys are capable of getting out of the backfield and catching the ball, Ryan said Friday. They both showed that last year. Devonta had more opportunities. ... I think Tevin is going to do the same.Coleman (6-1, 210) was a third-round pick in 2015 after rushing for more than 2,000 yards in his final season at Indiana. He ran the 40 in 4.39 seconds at his pro day before the draft but was slowed by hamstring and rib injuries as a rookie. Now Coleman is healthy and is eyeing new opportunities on kickoff returns and on offense.Im just excited Im going to play different roles in the game, Coleman said. Its a lot of expectation and Im doing that role as best as I can and just working my tail off to be as comfortable as I can back there and be all I can be.
Josh Anderson Jersey. Quinn said it is best for the team to protect Freeman. We want to do whats best for the team, Quinn said. Giving it to him every snap may not be the best way for us to win ballgames. Could he do it? Is he tough enough? 100 percent. But for us to play at our best were going to feature both the guys at their strengths.Quinn now has a new appreciation of Freemans quickness in the open field. Its the quickness that makes him such a challenge to cover, Quinn said. He can break one way laterally and get to full speed really fast. The guys that can do that, it makes them the hardest to cover.Game notes WR Julio Jones was limited to individual drills after leaving Thursdays first practice with an undisclosed injury Quinn called a small tweak. Jones caught deep passes early in practice and ran with no apparent sign of an injury. Quinn said Jones should be cleared for full participation in the next day or so. ... The team will be in pads for the first time on Saturday. ... DE Efe Obada (6-5, 265), who is from London and was with Dallas for training camp in 2015, was signed as a possible project, according to Quinn. The team waived WR Daje Johnson.---Online: AP NFL website:
