Spangenberg made his big league debut on Monday, hitting a two-run single and making two nice plays at third base. "This guy comes as a hitter. He showed up tonight. That was great," manager Bud Black said. Black said hitting coach Phil Plantier "felt good about the at-bat with Spangy. Cam didnt have great numbers against Ziegler. Phil through Zieglers type of pitching was pretty good for Spangy. Spangys sort of a slasher, likes the ball a little bit out, a little bit down and it worked out." Spangenberg said Plantier "trusts me. "I mean, he went up to me and said, Im going to tell Buddy youre the man. I told him, Im ready to go." Spangenberg hasnt stopped smiling since he got to San Diego. "This unbelievable so far. Im just trying to soak everything in and enjoy the moment and hopefully it lasts for a long time." Ziegler said he tried to throw down and away "and I threw it mid-thigh on the inner third and it was an easy pitch for him to spin on." Kevin Quackenbush (3-3) pitched the ninth for the win. The Padres had runners on first and third and no outs in the eighth before Evan Marshall struck out the side. Rookie Odrisamer Despaigne again pitched well at Petco Park but didnt get the decision. The Cuban right-hander allowed one run and four hits in seven innings. He retired 11 straight after Miguel Monteros RBI single in the fourth. The Diamondbacks had three of their four hits against Despaigne in the fourth. Cliff Pennington and David Peralta singled before Mark Trumbo struck out. Montero then singled to centre to bring in Pennington. Despaigne has a 2.11 ERA in seven home starts while his ERA in six road starts is 4.45. Arizonas Wade Miley had a similar line to Despaigne, allowing one run and seven hits in seven innings. San Diego tied it in the fifth when it got three hits against Miley, including Alexi Amaristas run-scoring single to left. In his last five starts, Miley is 0-2 with a 2.20 ERA after getting just six runs of support. Ziegler said it stunk to have the game end like it did. "Wade pitches his butt off to get us there and Evan was incredible to get out of the eighth. Its just frustrating. I just didnt make a good pitch." HOMER BALL Spangenberg said he got his home run ball from a couple of season ticket holders in exchange for a couple of autographed balls. "Thats great that they could do that. I really appreciate them doing that. If they need anything else I can get something," Spangenberg said. So while the Windy City is whipped by angst over the Bears, the Big Easy remains hopeful that Drew Brees will get the Saints going in the right direction.Minnesota (6-7) at Detroit (9-4)The previous time they met, the Lions had eight sacks, but the Vikings have played much better in the succeeding two months. Under head coach Mike Zimmer, a defensive mastermind, theyve allowed a league-low 131 points in the past eight games.Detroit is in excellent shape for at least an NFC wild card, and might even own one before it finishes the season at Green Bay; next weeks opponent is struggling Chicago.Oakland (2-11) at Kansas City (7-6)The Raiders sent the Chiefs stretch run in the wrong direction by beating Kansas City on Nov. 20, Oaklands first win in 17 games. KC has lost three in a row, while Oakland comes off its second victory, a shocker over San Francisco that could wind up costing the Raiders the No. 1 spot in the draft.Oakland has lost nine straight road games and will need to slow down Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston, who is tied for the league lead with 16 sacks.Tampa Bay (2-11) at Carolina (4-8-1)Derek Anderson gets the start at quarterback after Cam Newton suffered two broken bones in his back in an auto crash. Despite no shot at a winning record this season, the Panthers can still take the NFC South. But even in such a weak sector, winning out is a must.Washington (3-10) at New York Giants (4-9)Not much to recommend here. Perhaps watching whether rookie Odell Beckham Jr. can make more spectacular catches and add to his record string of 90-plus yards receiving in six games.
