I've already beta Maple M Mesos analyzed MapleStory 2. I know what this game is and exactly what happens once you reach the end -- you're bored and lonely, and there's nothing left to do but to learn more about the world. But exactly what the beta version was lacking -- the enormous MapleStory community of kids and teens now grown up as college students and young professionals -- meant that I was simply playing with a shell of a game.
It is the thrill of knowing others are also striving to make their personalities the silliest-looking or even the most lovable, that smart names are well sought after, and that when you are searching for a party pursuit, five other strangers anytime will immediately join you. These are the things that make this match significant. I sat there for hours trying every wonderful word I could think of until I eventually landed on a four-letter word username that others hadn't taken yet: Leit, like in leitmotif. (Additionally, I created characters called Enlarge and Colonial, but people who don't have quite the same appeal for obvious reasons.)
In beta any word was available, which sucked the joy out of the hunt that is exquisite. The same goes for building a home. You're afforded so much free space and furniture, but the act of laying the bricks and complex details is dull if nobody knocks on your door.
I have come to the conclusion which MapleStory 2 lives or dies by how many people are playing it together. And while that is true for most massive multiplayer games, it's particularly true for Maple, because its fan base is largely people who grew up using the original, and revel in the nostalgia factor. No one really plays Maple because of content and its quests.
One of the most well-known activities in the original MapleStory, and it stays that way in the sequel, is allowing your personality stand in the middle of a town square as you're physically apart from Maple story M Mesos the match. You might not be playing, but you are displaying your look and stats into onlookers. That doesn't have quite the exact same charm when nobody is searching.
