Ryan Lochte will forfeit $100,000 and a chance to swim at next years world championships as part of the penalty for his drunken encounter at a gas station in Brazil during last months Olympics.
Eric Oelschlagel Jersey .The U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Swimming announced the penalties Thursday. Lochte is banned through the end of June. That means he wont be able to qualify for Julys world championships, which normally dont draw top fields in the year after the Olympics. As we have said previously, the behavior of these athletes was not acceptable. It unfairly maligned our hosts and diverted attention away from the historic achievements of Team USA, USOC CEO Scott Blackmun said. Each of the athletes has accepted responsibility for his actions and accepted the appropriate sanctions.Lochte will also get no monthly funding from either the USOC or USA Swimming. He cant access USOC training centers, must perform 20 hours of community service and will miss Team USAs post-Olympics trip to the White House.Lochtes attorney, Jeff Ostrow, did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.Agreeing to four-month suspensions were Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen, who were with Lochte at the gas station. Those sanctions, which end Dec. 31, also strip funding and training access and preclude them from the White House visit.Bentz, 20, will also serve 10 hours of community service for violating a curfew rule for athletes under 21. He released a statement on Twitter saying hed learned his lesson and was anxious to move on.The USOC gives a $25,000 bonus to Olympic gold-medal winners, and USA Swimming has awarded a $75,000 gold-medal bonus at past Olympics. But that money pales in comparison to what Lochte lost last month when key sponsors , including Speedo USA and Ralph Lauren, abandoned the 32-year-old in the wake of his actions at the gas station, then his rapidly changing accounts of what really happened. Estimates have put the financial hit for those losses at around $1 million.Swimmings international federation, FINA, called the sanctions proportionate, adequate and sufficient, and said it had no plans to augment them. The International Olympic Committee has referred the case to its ethics commission, which is still reviewing the case. While the near-10-month suspension is four months longer than what Michael Phelps received in 2014 for his second DUI, anything short of a ban from the next Olympics -- never a realistic option -- isnt enough to truly derail Lochtes career, either in or out of the pool.Despite his embarrassment, Lochte has maintained a high profile, posting regularly on social media and accepting a spot on the upcoming season of Dancing With The Stars.Last month, Brazilian police charged Lochte with filing a false robbery report, but he is unlikely to return to Brazil to defend himself.Lochtes gold in the 4x200 freestyle relay was one of 121 overall medals the United States won at the Olympics, yet his actions at the gas station, combined with his shifting stories and the resulting investigation, overshadowed a large portion of the second half of the Rio Games. When Code of Conduct infractions occur, its our responsibility to take action that reflects the seriousness of what happened, USA Swimming executive director Chuck Wielgus said. Unfortunately, this story line took attention away from the athletes who deserved it the most.

Uniteds eighth defeat of a wretched campaign means Liverpool, which currently occupies the fourth and final Champions League place, could go nine points clear of its fierce rival by beating West Bromwich Albion on Sunday. Charlie Adam scored both of Stokes goals at Britannia Stadium either side of Robin van Persies equalizer, with a miserable day for seventh-place United capped by first-half injuries to centre halves Jonny Evans and Phil Jones that forced them off. A lot of Chicago Cubs fans have waited a long time to see them win the championship. In this case, it feels like forever. How many people can say they went to the very first World Series game at Wrigley Field? That was in 1929, and future Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens was there. He was in the box seats behind third base a few Octobers later, too, and saw Babe Ruth call his shot.Very definitely, Stevens told The Associated Press this week by phone from Florida. He pointed his bat. Now, at 96 and outdating the ivy on the outfield walls at the cherished ballpark, Stevens planned to be at Game 4 Saturday night when his Cubs host the Cleveland Indians. And he had a playful wish. Well, beyond the obvious.Tossing out a ball from the mound at Wrigley, as he did in 2005. Only this time, at the World Series.Id love to, the veteran right-hander said. Id like to see if I can throw it over the plate again.Stevens said he was still on that bench, but added with a bright tone, I suppose theres a couple days left. The Cubs won 5-1 Wednesday night in Cleveland to tie things at one game apiece. The Series shifts to the city where Stevens grew up for Game 3 Friday night. Not since 1908 have the Cubs won the World Series. They were led by the Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance double play combination that became famed in verse -- the same year, Take Me Out to the Ball Game was written.Born in 1920, Stevens said he has no recollection from his boyhood days of older friends and family members talking about that championship club.Of the some 7.4 billion people on the planet, no telling for sure if theres anyone around who would recall those Cubs. They are alive, but do they remember? said Robert Young, a senior consultant for gerontology for Guinness World Records. I think theres probably a few.Young estimates there are 4,000 people around the globe who were alive theen, most of them outside the United States.

Its amazing to me the Cubs franchise lasted that long without winning, he added. Before the World Series opener, Stevens had already formed his opinion on the outcome.I think the only question is whether it will be four straight or whether it will take five games for us to win it in Chicago, he said. And even though the Indians and their crowd have been waiting since 1948 for a crown, its been much longer on the North Side of Chicago. The Cubs are entitled to win in this one, I think, he said.Justice for the Cubs, so to speak.Stevens served on the Supreme Court from 1975 to 2010 and in his chambers he had an autographed photo of Cubs great Ernie Banks and a jersey of Chicago pitcher Mark Prior.Stevens also had a framed scorecard from the 1932 game when Ruth pointed. It was a gift long ago from a fellow law clerk, who knew Stevens had seen the Bambino that afternoon as a 12-year-old.As a kid, he followed the Cubs in the fledging days of radio. With more modern devices, Stevens rooted for them as often as he could this season. The Cubs began their drive to end the championship drought this year at spring training in the Phoenix suburbs -- in 1908, Arizona wasnt even a state. They led the majors with 103 wins, but Stevens wasnt about to celebrate early. After so many years of hope and so little success, this is their first World Series trip since 1945.Its hard to acknowledge, but it happened, he said.Just like Stevens imagined, sort of. Shortly before opening day, he told the AP he was anticipating big things from this new, talented bunch of Cubs.I dont think its a question of whether theyll win a championship, he said then. Its whether Ill still be here to see it. ' ' '
