Sixty tonnes of soil was dug from the valley below and hauled up the 250m high hill and packed around the exposed roots. It will be a year before the tree is given the all-clear.
The local town council, which uses the Lonely Tree as its official symbol pledged to underwrite the costs of the tree rescue mission.
Matt Oates, from Britain's National Trust says the mission to save Lonely Tree shows how people need and deeply love trees.
